Cardinal Sketch

Here is another line drawing I did for practice; a sketch of a cardinal.   I’m trying to work on line variation, and doing small studies like this has been helpful so far.  I’m also doing a digital painting to add color, but I’m not finished with that yet.

Water Drops on Carnation

This flower print is one of the images I recently took of a red carnation.  This one turned out to be one of my favorites, and makes me even more ready to see flowers blooming again.  This warm weather in February has my brain mixed up.

Photography Day: Indoor Shoot – Flower

It is the middle of winter and not easy to get outside for some nice photographs, so I had to make do with an indoor photo shoot and some bare essentials. This video shows some things I grabbed from around the house to set up macro photos of a flower.

Art Video – Hiding Behind Masks

I had tried to post this video before, but had some problems.  So, here we go again!  This is my youtube art video showing the coloring process of my recent digital painting.  I think most of my other videos so far have been artwork of animals, so this is a look at how I paint a face.  Portraits are my favorite, but I always seem to struggle in the beginning of a painting.  Things usually come together in the end, which is always a good feeling.

Hiding Behind Masks

I finished my digital painting, and I’m pretty happy with it.  I’ve been drawing clowns for a while now.  They appeal to me mostly because of their awkwardness, and maybe I relate to that.  For me it isn’t just a picture of a clown, but of a woman maybe feeling awkward, shy or guarded that feels she needs to hide her true self (in this case using make up and a mask).  I think that is kind of what most of my clown pictures represent; a broken person hiding behind masks, or trying to get attention in the wrong ways, or feeling very vulnerable and awkward not really sure how to fit in, or maybe just a goofy person.  Maybe they are all little pieces of me.  How many masks do you hide behind?

Hiding Behind Masks WIP

I thought I’d share my digital painting WIP.  I had posted the drawing earlier, but I’ll post part of it here again so you can see the comparison.  I actually like both the drawing and digital painting, so ultimately I might make prints for both versions.  I recorded the painting process so far, so I’ll eventually upload a video when this is finished.  The hardest part is the face, and that is mostly done.  So, hopefully I can finish the rest of the picture tonight.
